Rio is a city bursting with energy, bulging at the seams with the endless options available to the jet-setting crowd. It used to be seen as the beach town of South America, and while it still is, it’s not solely that anymore. Rio’s luxury vacation market has exploded in the last 5 years. And with the World Cup now upon Rio, and the Summer Olympics not far off, the pulse of Rio may still be beach football, acai, and samba, but the opportunities for the affluent traveler to play in South America’s glamour city is off the charts! We’ve put together a small sample of the type of tailored luxury vacation Rio Exclusive can help you organize – but of course, this is only a taster for what your holiday may be. An Exclusive Guide to Luxury Tailored Vacations in Rio de Janeiro
Helicopter Tour/Yacht Charter
If you want to live like a rock star for a week, what better way than hiring your own yacht or helicopter to see the Cidade Maravilhosa from a whole new angle. Seeing this colourful city – the deep blues of the bay and ocean, the white of the waves crashing, the golden sand and lush green of the forested mountains – from above is a totally unique and priceless experience. As you tour around the coast, and then fly over Sugar Loaf and Corcovado you’ll feel like you can reach right out and touch the outstretched, welcoming hands of Christ Redeemer himself. Seeing the city from the comfort of your own yacht is a luxury many of our guests have enjoyed – including many professional athletes from futebol, the NFL and the NBA, as well as international pop and rock stars. Live the rock star life as your yacht takes you around Guanabara Bay, passing by Sugar Loaf and Flamengo Beach, and then hitting the seas and cruising past the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Barra. You can enjoy your day with a Brazilian churrasco (BBQ) on board with perfectly grilled picanha, and sipping caipirinhas made by your own onboard bartender.
Hang gliding, Pedra da Gavea, Rock Climb Sugaloaf
There are endless views to be seen in Rio – so many different stunning views and different ways to see Rio. Being locally based, and having started the luxury rental property movement in Rio, we are extremely well connected, and so can offer some amazing, local, and adventurous days out. Two of the most incredible ways to see Rio from above – without flying that is! – is from the top of Pedra da Gavea, or Sugar Loaf. For Pedra da Gavea, we have a guide to take you on a hike up one of the most famous mountains in Rio (it is a hike – no rock climbing needed) located at the far end of Leblon Beach. When you reach the top, you’ll be in awe of the jaw dropping view that you have over the whole of Rio de Janeiro. It is a moment that lasts with people a lifetime. For Sugar Loaf, most people take the cable car to the top. But why do the ordinary? We have rock climbing professionals who work with Rio Exclusive, who will guide you on a rock climb up the side of Sugar Loaf, providing stunning views that most people never get to see, on your way to the top. Hang Gliding from Pedra Bonita in Sao Conrado is also another very popular excursion, as you’ll be gliding in tandem with your instructor for 20 minutes over this peaceful beach side neighborhood, landing directly on the beach below
Helicopter to go to Buzios, Paraty or Angra dos Reis
Most tourists who come to Brazil make their home base Rio, and stay there. But if you want to know the real authentic Brazil, it’s great to leave the urban beach city and head out of the city for the other beach towns that the local rich and famous go to. Buzios is a small, flourishing town outside of Rio, made famous by Bridgitte Bardot, as it was one of her favourite places to visit. It was once a fishing town, and now it’s bursting with quaint cobble stoned main shopping streets, hip clubs, amazing restaurants and world class shopping. Angra is another beach side location outside of Rio, dotted with impeccable lost beaches and charming towns. Off the coast of Angra is also Ilha Grande, which is an idyllic paradise, where no cars are allowed, you sip cachaca on the beach, and indulge in the abundant seafood. We can bring you to any of these locations by private helicopter, chopping down the driving time into an unforgettable journey along Brazil’s coast. You will no doubt want to spend more than a day in each location, and what better way than to stay in one of our luxurious Buzios villas, or on a private island in Angra?
For many guests, a major part of any vacation is the gastronomy of each region they visit. Gastronomic travel is becoming all the more popular, and Rio Exclusive not only recognizes this, but since our inception has offered fresh Brazilian breakfasts and the services of a private chef to our luxury guests who wish to truly experience local, high end cuisines. Our chef – exclusive to Rio Exclusive – is Chef Nicolas Martinez. Chef Nicolas is Colombian, studied at the Basculinary School in Spain, and ran a very highly regarded restaurant in Bogota, Colombia. We’re excited to be able to arrange his services for our guests, as Chef Nicolas combines his love of food, his passion for detail and his extensive knowledge, to create remarkable dishes, and unforgettable dinners.
Exclusive Luxury Properties
The bells and whistles of every vacation really puts the cherry on top of your holiday. But one of the main elements of your holiday will naturally be your luxury accommodation. Hotels fall drastically short in Rio, and the real hidden accommodation treasures are the renovated villas tucked into the mountain jungle sides, such our villas in Joatinga, as well as the abundance of luxury properties peppered throughout all of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, hidden behind the façade of traditional buildings. To know what makes the heart of the city beat, you have to be local. And to have access to these hidden jewels of properties you have to be local as well.
Authentic : Favela + some sort of charity/community event
Favelas are where an enormous amount of Cariocas (those native to Rio) live, work and play. They are cities amongst themselves, with an amazing blend of sounds, smells and colourful sights. To look at a favela hugging the mountain sides, you can see the character held in these neighborhoods from afar, and only by visiting a favela itself can you truly and deeply appreciate how an everyday Carioca lives and plays. Through our local network, Rio Exclusive has incredibly trusted and knowledgeable guides, local from the favelas, who are proud to take our guests through and show them, explain to them - and most important - to share with them their lives. We visit the largest favela in South America – Rocinha - where it’s thought roughly 200,000 Cariocas live. As well we can also visit one of the smaller favelas, called Vidigal, which hangs over the sea, and boasts unrivalled views of the coast. While here, we can arrange lunch with a local “lanchenette”, as well it’s possible to visit a Samba or Capoeira School, for a truly once in a lifetime experience.
Nightlife : Lapa, Santa Teresa, Barra
Rio has forever been linked with Samba and Bossa Nova. But there’s so much more to nightlife scene than these two traditional musical styles. Rio Exclusive can allow you to know the real Rio nightlife, where the Cariocas go, where the new music starts, and where dancing goes on until dawn. You may like to have a very authentic night out in Lapa – the downtown area that comes to life at nights, with pulsating music escaping from club doors, located beside the famous Arcos da Lapa. The street party can be as good as inside the clubs, and if you feel like live music, we can guide you to Rio Scenarium or Rio 40 Graus – two very locally popular clubs featuring Forro music (which has its origins in the north east of Brazil), and top DJs. If Samba is more your style, we can visit Pedra do Sal, or even some Samba schools during Carnival. Whatever your tastes in music, we have the connections to the hottest clubs in all locations in Rio – from downtown in Lapa, out to the sprawling modern neighborhood of Barra.
Romance for Couples
With Rio’s year round sunshine, some of the world’s best beaches, and an energetic city to explore, Rio has been a hot honeymoon and couples destination for the past few years. What better way to spend time with each other than to stay in one of our romantic flats just for two, such as beach front flat in Copacabana, a modern 1 bedroom in the Lagoa area, or in a studio in the tranquil and beach side neighborhood of Arpoador. While in Arpoador, let us help arrange for you a picnic on top of Arpoador Rock – famous throughout the city for the stunning sunsets looking back across Ipanema beach.
Like a local
Learn Cooking, Surfing, Capoeira or Jiu Jitsu Like a Local
If you want to really feel like a local, and leave Rio after having become an honourary Carioca, then there’s no better way than to learn to live like a local. Some of the hobbies of a traditional native Carioca are surfing, doing capoeira (which is a Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics and music, with strong African roots), studying Jiu Jitsu through the world famous Gracie Academy, or even cooking local and authentic foods. Rio Exclusive has the inside contacts to organize lessons for you while you’re staying with us in Rio – from our Chef Nicolas’ private cooking lessons, to surf and stand up paddle lessons in Arpoador or Barra, to learning a Brazilian martial arts, we have you connected to the best in every field.
